Comparison of left ventricular and pulmonary arterial injection sites in determination of cardiac output by indicator dilution technique.

چکیده
Cardiac outputs calculated from left ventricular indicator dilution curves were compared to outputs calculated from pulmonary arterial curves in 58 patients with a variety of cardiac abnormalities. Cardiac outputs calculated from left ventricular and pulmonary arterial curves differed by only 0.037 ± 0.052 LI mm. Individual measurements of cardiac output using left ventricular curves had an estimated standard error of 0.41 L/min (9.0 percent of output); individual measurements using pulmonary arterial curves had an estimated standard error of 0.35 L/min (7.7 percent of output). Thus, the two methods gave nearly identical values for cardiac output and were equally reproducible. A significant associadon (P=O.02) was found between mitral regurgitation and dissimilar values for cardiac output determined by the two methods. It is concluded that the site of injection of the indicator does not appreciably influence calculation of cardiac output except in the presence of severe mitral regurgitation.

Validity of indicator-dilution determinations of cardiac output in patients with mitral regurgitation.
mHE indicator-dilution method has been widely employed for determination of cardiac output since its introduction by Stewart' and Hamilton and associates.2 The effect of unrecognized recirculation of indicator particles upon the primary indicator time-concentration curve has caused concern as to whether this method may be employed in such conditions as mitral regurgitation3' 4and as to whether ...
متن کاملIndicator-dilution measurement of cardiac output with dissolved hydrogen.
Dissolved HL has been used as an indicator for measuring cardiac output by the techniques of constant-rate injection and sudden, single injection indicator dilution. Because of its low solubility, H2 is eliminated essentially quantitatively in the lungs and recirculates negligibly. The constant-rate injection technique involves the gas chromatographic measurement of pulmonary (or systemic) arte...
متن کاملThe Pulmonary Blood
The measurement of blood volume in the pulmonary vascular bed during life became theoretically feasible with the introduction of indicator dilution methods by Stewart (1) and Hamilton, Moore, Kinsman and Spurling (2). The principles and formulas set forth by these investigators have since undergone extensive scrutiny by theoretical analysis, in circulation models, and in vivo. As a result of th...

are based on the Stewart-Hamilton principle. Different types of indicators (dyes and radioisotopes) are used, and their varying concentrations are determined either from arterial sampled blood 1, 2 or by precordial scanning.3-9 Combined right and left heart catheterization provides a more direct measurement of pulmonary blood volume in man, by the indicator-dilution technic. In methods already ...
متن کاملCOMPARISON BETWEEN THE EFFECTS OF 5 PERCENT HYPERTONIC SODIUM CHLORIDE SOLUTION AND 0.9 PERCENT SODIUM CHLORIDE SOLUTION ON LEFT VENTRICUL AR CONTRACTION
Hypertonic saline solution can absorb part of the intracellular fluid volume into the extracellular space. The effects of this solution on the cardiovascular system are increased coronary flow and increased left ventricular contraction, without sympathetic system activation. This study was designed to assess the effects of hypertonic saline solution in open heart surgery and to compare it w...
